Loss of turbo boost 700

While driving the 87 740 turbo I decided to air it out on the hiway. Seemed to do fine but I noticed that the turbo only went to about 3"clock on the dash gage. Car ran pretty good 3k RPM at 80 mph. But I was concerned when the turbo boost would not go higher. Any help welcome. Ed 200k miles
