tourque converter on '84 240 DL

I'm ready to install the torque converter and was thinking of taking out the old tranny fluid with a baster (sucking it out), then partially filling it with clean fluid before installing in into the tranny. Then, making sure it slides into its groove, I'd tie a piece of rope from one side to the other, to temporarily hold it in place. Then, and after getting it as far as possible into the rear of the engine, I'd cut the rope and slide it out. Does anyone have a better method of installation or have some words of wisdom? Thanks!
