Can cleaning the breather box make the smell of oil go away? 700 1989

I am trying to get one thing after another fixed on this 89 760 I bought (from a friend, mind you). I have noted that there is always a smell of oil when driving - not too strong, but still there. Also the dipstick will come out just a bit with driving for a day.

I think this indicates that there is need of a good cleaning of all the lines and the breather box on the side - right? Once I get everything cleaned up - am I right that the B230F is totally closed off from the outside air, and that the smell should go away.

I am getting a bit skittish about pouring more and more money into this, and in the end still have things (like the smell) that I would not like to live with.

Almost wish I had went for the 940.
