Whisting noise when 740 accelerates 700

My car makes a ghostly whistling noise when I accelerate (probably just in 1st gear). The noise gets higher the faster I go. I've already read some things on this forum about the possible cause, but I'm also concerned that it may be unsafe to drive. Does anyone know about this problem? I would really appreciate any help, I live in L.A. so my car gets a LOT of daily use.
