starter won't disengage 1800 1966

Starter won't let go after the motor starts... none of my service manuals offer any advice (all seem preoccupied with what to do when it WON'T engage) and I can't find any posting about it for 1800. It's probably simple, but I have very limited time to work on this and would like to go in prepared (or at least focused). Anyone?
