Valves - sometimes noisy - sometimes not - what give? 700 1989

Ok..working out the kinks on the 89 760.

I drove about 300 miles yesterday - all highway. Most of the time the valve noise was OK ..at other times they got pretty loud.
On a scale 1-10 ...
Quietest 3
Loudest 7-8

I have not done a valve adjust yet - but this is making me think that lubrication may not be getting upstairs all the time. Since this car was a low mileage driver -

I am thinking I should ..
1. pull the pan - check the oil pump for clogging
2. do an engine flush (read some pros and cons)
3. drive it and change the oil more often for a spell
4. something else ??
