88 760 re-wire project completion! 700

Hello everyone,

Well the 88 765 GLE got a new set of injector "O" rings this afternoon during the re-assembly of the manifold. Since the battery had gone dead during the last month of inactivity, I ran a jumper cable from the workhorse (86 245) and held my breath as I turned the key in the 760. Praise God! It fired and ran SMOOTHLY on the first crank! I drove it around the block then tried to blow it up. The darned thing revved to the limit in low and jumped like a rabbit into second. I let it run to about 70 in second and then pulled it beack into the yard for a battery charge and wash. This is the smoothest that the car has run since I changed the head gasket months ago.

To recap the project: Find the root cause of the intermittent insturment failures that seem to plague the 88-89 760 series Turbo

1) I pulled the intake manifold and stripped the wiring harness wrap to expose the wiring.

2) a thorough inspection show that the instrument wiring was inadequately engineered and below par by American wiring standards, i.e. multiple ground splices in the harness wrap, grounds broken through connectors, etc.

3) complete replacement of the wiring connectors with GM type OEM connector bodies and terminals.

4) All critical instruments grounded separately, AMM, Coolant Temp Sensor, Ignition Amplifier, etc. Nothing shares a common ground! The wiring that left the ECU was also cut and grounded to the chassis in the passenger compartment before exiting to another ground point in the engine bay.

5) All new ground points were jumpered to the engine block and new battery cables, chassis ground cables, and starter cables werte replaced, including a new 10 ga. ground from the intake manifold to the chassis.

I hope this helps someone that actually wants to keep a 760. We have decided that if the car will run for two weeks, it will be given to a family of ten that needs another set of wheels.

Regards,
