failed smog... huh? 200 1985

Hey,

My girlfriends newly aquired Brick failed smog miserably....
mainly because of all three (HC,CO & NO) being over the limit.

I am thinking/assuming this could be because of a gutted Cat. I have not taken it off to confirm this yet but.... It seems very suspicious.

In addition, it failed because the timing was 27 degrees BTDC???? is this even possible, being that the car idles and runs perfect???

I hooked up a timing light and it looked to me like the timing was right where it should be - 12 degrees +/- 2?, I mean would the car even run ok with the timing being that much off?

Any opinions?

Thanks,
JJ

p.s. I ordered a new cat and the normal tune-up parts from FCP Groton already and plan on replacing these before the re-test
