Question for the masses -
Having a charging problem with my '82 242. Battery is good. Replaced alternator and still no charging. Light in dash works but does not come on when running. From what I have read, I suspect the wiring and will check all of the connections at the alternator. I would love any advice on this little debacle, but my real quesiton has to do with the v-belts that turn the alternator.
There are two belts that turn the alternator (which obviously has two groves for the belts). These two belts are out of alignment. To the point that if I took of the front belt (as in the front of the car) and put the back belt into the front groove it would line up perfectly. The mis-alignment is enough that the back belt is angled enough that with belt vibration, I am almost certain that the fan blades probably nic the belt under driving conditions.
So my questions are as follows: 1. Why would this be out of alignment? The alternator bolts are tight, I have the correct alternator installed in the car.
2. are both belts necessary, or could I get away with removing the front belt and routing the back belt into the front grove?
Any suggestions would be mighty helpful, I am a bit stumped.
Thanks all!
