M46 gear ratio's 200 1988

Did Volvo make the M46 manuel with two different gear ratio.
The reason I ask this is that I have a M46 from a 85/244 and it is in my wagon
which has a 3.73 rear gear.My son's 242GT has a M46 with a 3.91 gear and it seems that he can wind out longer than the on in my wagon.I have a M46 out of a 79/242 that I will switch if it will make a difference.
