Dear Brickboard,
My 1989 240 sedan has been making a terrible noise somewhere around the power steering pump.
I dont know how to describe the noise exactly. Its a little like a typical squeeky fan belt but with an added overtone that makes me think it is going to be more expensive to fix. My fist and hasty conclusion was that I had a bad bearing in the power steering pump or in the air conditioner pump that is serviced by the same belt.
I tried changing the tension on the belt but the problem remained. The belt is fairly tight. I can push it in about an inch or so on its side.
I also sprayed a little WD40 at the back of the power steering and air conditioner pulleys with the car was shut off. (I tried with the car running but the fan blew the WD40 off course.) No change.
Here is the funny thing. There is access to the inside of the belt down around the air conditioner pump pulley. If I spray there between the belt and the air conditioner pulley with belt dressing, the noise will go away for a minute or 2. Then it comes back. I am hoping that this means there is no internal bearing problems in either pump.
Does anyone have an idea what my problem isn or what to try? Please advise. Thank you.
