This is a follow up posting as I got only one not very-useful response last time. I also have some additional symptoms to report.
in my 1995 940, the Power Steering acts very odd in 2 situations (so far).
First, when holding a sustained curve at a speed higher than 30 mph (such as on an interstate highway cloverleaf), the power-assist "pushes-back" against me. When it happens it is not constant, but sort of an intermittent push that I have to keep correcting for. Very annoying and probably a bit dangerous.
Second, If I am sitting still (in a parallel parking situation) and I crank the wheel hard to pull out, the power steering pushes back. Intermittently, again. Saturday, when this happened, I could actually see the steering wheel spasming. Very weird.
The one response I got to the eariler post was to check my fluid level (it's fine, I checked it many times since buying the car, the fluid appears to be good also). There is no measurable fluid loss (though I do have an annoying oil leak in the front of the car - seems unrelated). I'd almost think that something incredibly bad is happening - except that it only happens in these two driving situations. It's fine on the highway. It's fine driving around the city. It's fine parking (except as noted above). It doesn't feel like bad ball joints, struts, tie-rods,steering rack failure, or any of the other problems I've experienced in volvos.
Anybody got a diagnosis, suggestion, or (luck persisting) an inexpensive fix?
I suspect a blockage in the PS lines, but I'm fairly ignorant about this part of a car.
Any and all help is appredicated!
P.S. I have read the FAQ regarding the Steering System and the Front Suspension and my experiences don't seem to fall into any of the examples.
