odometer problems on 1989 240dl (blue lunchbox on wheels) 200 1989

I have had my 89 240DL for about six months now. When I bought the car it had 128,008 miles on the odometer. Now, half a year later, the odometer reads 128,008 miles. Occasionally it's nice to know how far I'm traveling on a trip, or the distance between one point and another. Can anyone tell me what parts are prone to failure with the odometer and it's related components, or what the problem may be? Thank you.
