Dash Lights 900

My wife's 91 940 has a problem with the dash lights. Sometimes when the ignition switch is turned on the oil light, alternator light and the other lights come on as they should before cranking and then go off after the engine has started, Except the Check Engine light stays on. Other times none of the lights come on as the ignition is turned on, and stay off after the engine is started. This includes the Check Engine Light. The overdrive light is the exception and works properly in either case. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.
