Ignition 'Start' Position DEAD! 700 1990

I've researched the Forum & unable to lock in on a possible solution. My '90 740 Ignition Switch was "dead" in the "Start" position. I can run a hot wire from the battery + terminal to starter solenoid through a push button and the starter will turn over to start the car fine with the key in the "on" position. I assumed that the electrical portion of the start switch was bad and replaced it. Trouble is, that apparently wasn't it; I still have the same problem. Is there something else that would cause the starter not to engage with the switch in "Start"? I checked the obvious for loose wires, low battery, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks much, Dirk.
