Synthetic Trans Fluid -- Benefits/Disadvantages 700 1989

There are many posts indicating the benefit of changing from standard transmission fluid to a synthetic transmission fluid. Apparently, smoother shifting, cooler running, and longer mileage between change intervals seem to surface as benefits.

Have there been any disadvantages with synthetic transmission fluid (other than higher cost)?
