Is this the way a 240 is supposed to sound? 200

I am considering buying a 240 sedan from a local used car dealer, a 92 model. Test drove it today, and I'm wondering if the exhaust sound that I hear is normal or if the mufflers are going bad, or something. At 60mph, I hear a low exhaust groan. Now, I'm thinking I shouldn't hear this. After returning to the carlot, I poked my head underneath with the car idling to listen for any holes in the exhaust system. Everything looked fine, except that there was a u-bolt holding the front muffler to the exhaust pipe.....maybe this is the way it's supposed to be, I dunno. But, the stub pipe at the front of the muffler wasn't mated together with the exhaust pipe as close as it should be. There were 2 to 4 slotted openings, each about 1/8" long by 1/8" wide right at the u-bolt, where exhaust was puffing out. At idle, I could feel and hear the puffing. Not loud, but it sounded like a "puff". Sorry but I can't find a better term to describe it. My question to you Volvo 240 guys is this: Would that amount of exhaust leakage, which was right below the front seat area, cause the exhaust groaning I was hearing at highway speed? At 60, I'm thinking this car shouldn't have any audible noise from the exhaust. Am I right or wrong on this? As far as road noise from the tires, the car is nice and quiet. If I can was certain to be rid of this annoying exhaust noise, I'd buy the car. Thanks guys!
