I recently purchased a 1982 244 GLT turbo in Portland OR and drove it up to my home in Anchorage Alaska.- It's oficially my new project car. the previous owner installed a better (but made by Volvo) liquid cooled turbo, and intercooler. The car is respectably quick for its age, and with 17" rims, flowmaster, billsteins, etc, its fun to drive. this is what I've been thinking: I figure I'll eventually put a few grand more into this car (I've already put in more than I expected) and I want to make sure I put my money in the right places. I don't have any major upgrades planned right now (to the engine at least, I need a paint job, audio system, etc) but I've been looking at camshafts (would you suggest the Turbo Performance cam or the VX performance from IPD? also I've heard something about the k- cam. what are the advantages?) and an adjustable cam gear. I'd like to keep the enigine I have (I don't have the know-how to switch engines yet, but if necessary I know someone who does) because I'm expecting it gets way better mileage than a V-8 conversion would give me. Not to say I get great mileage... I'd really like more low- end power, at least to begin with. But I've been thinking about a bigger turbo ( I know this won't help me with low-end) or a twin- turbo setup - I don't know if how/if a twin turbo would work on my car... but if anyone has any ideas on turbo makes, sizes, costs, installation, any of the above, I'd love to get some more information. what would a programmable fuel management system do for me?
I guess like everyone- I'm looking for biggest power increase for smallest cost. I just don't want to spend a bunch of money on modifying this engine, and then decide to switch engines or something. thanks for all your help.
