puzzling over intermittent metal-on-metal sound and power loss 200 1987

The '87 (220K, 5-speed)is revealing another of its quirks. On three occasions over the last three months, the engine--shortly after starting to maybe a couple blocks of driving--loses power. It will idle just fine if you let up on the gas, but when you push on the gas pedal to get the car moving again,it does not respond AND there is a metal-to-metal grinding sound that seems to be coming from the driver's side of the engine. The sound does not seem to be rpm connected. The remedy in each case has been to coast to the side of the street and simply shut off the engine, and then restart it right away, at which time the revs come back, the metal gnashing is gone, and everything appears to be back to normal--until it happens again a couple weeks later. This exact scenario happened once (fourth incident) after the engine was fully warmed up. Many thanks for any wisdom offered.
