Ahh, Sally runs (Plate handed to me at DMV was ### SLY... an omen I'm certain).
I was going crazy as it would crank like the bejeezus but not "pop." All the tests showed it should run but no spark (?!?!?). Friend came over and asked if the ignition switch by-passed the electrical system when cranking (huh?).
Well the wiring diagram clearly shows a hot lead to the coil from the second termimal on the fuse box... but the PO had a wire running from the switch itself (not the stock armored unit)... Hmmmm.
Sure enough, no power to coil when cranking! 2 minutes later and it fires up as I reconnect the "wrong" lead to the coil and viola'!
I forgot how vague that puddin' stirrer was.
Now I just need to flush the fuel lines of the gunk, finish the wiring repairs, plug the giant holes in the floor, get an alignment, new tires, etc.
Anyone got a guess as to what ignition switch I have? It uses a Volvo key. A 140 series unit, perhaps?
My journey to this point has been a hoot. Plenty of aggravation and triumph, in turn. To recap: Free car, "needs a valve job."
HAH! b18 completely shot. Get b20 from wrecked p1800. "New" motor turns out to be a boogered rebuild at least 50k miles ago (or they didn't bother to replace the rings, bearings, valve seats, etc...). Steering box leaks, tranny full of water once I get around to installing it (what? no parts available? I have to re-use THOSE???), rear-end noisy, rust, Swiss cheese radiator (that hurt the budget), front bearings wobbly, suspension? Don't make me laugh!, etc...
"Freshened" engine now purrs (once terribly lean initial setting fixed... thought it was 1 1/2 turns for the jet... 2 1/2 MUCH closer and ended up even richer... at 4800' elevation, no less). Quiet, little smoke, good power but the alignment prevents a real run-in.
New suspension bushes must be helping but, again, alignment prevents exploration.
Still, $2500 in parts (many of top quality but five times as many "freshened" by yours truly) and it goes. Could be worse. Won't be a concours contender unless I spend at least $10k on the body but...
I'm stoked.
