I can't get into reverse! 200 1983

I have a 1983 244 turbo, with the m46 and it won't go into reverse. The lever that you pull up seems to have lost it's connection, as when I pull it it does absoulutly nothing and it's just floating there. What do I need to do to fix this? Is there a way to get the shift knob off with out breaking it? Thanks for any information and happy bricking. I have never fixed a promblem like this before, so the more details the better.
