740 auto trans R locked 700

the (auto) trans shifter on my 1991 740 b230 sedan locked up on my wife when she started the car and tried to back up...she waited a few minutes and then it worked ok.

I have had this car since new, and I vaguely remember this happening long ago. I also seem to remember there was a button I could push, which would manually release the shifter - unfortunately, I can't find the button.

Does anyone know where this button is located? I seem to remember poking around through the bristles around the shifter knob?

Also, any ideas on the cause?
