clutch cable issue on '81 245 200

My brother's '81 245 is having various problems since he had the clutch cable replaced a few weeks back. Immeditaley after the cable was replaced, the reverse lights have stayed on(while the car was running), and it is next to impossible to shift from one gear into another while the car is running-though while it is off, all gears are easily accessible. Do I just need to have my mechanic properly reinstall the cable, or does more work need to be done? Thank you one and all and happy Monday morning :)
