This is a long shot, and possibly a long story.
A friend of mine has an '81 wagon Kjet, non-turbo. I told her I'd try and diagnose her car since another local shade tree mechanic was unable to fix it. The thing stumbles and misses on part throttle or full throttle. It's worse when it's warmed up. It still runs good enough to drive but is annoying.
Previous mechanic supposedly did a tune up, definitely replaced the fuel filter. I confirmed 12V to the pre pump, took out the pre pump fuse and heard the main pump start chattering so I assume pre-pump is doing it's job. I also disconnected the plug to the cold start injector once it was warmed up to take the thermal time switch out of the equation.
I noticed all the injectors pretty loose in their holes and was actually able to pull the #4 injector clean out of it's hole without looseneing the retaining bolt. I suppose O rings are cheap, is there a reason that bad injector seals would cause this symptom?
I don't have the fuel pressure tester for the CPR, and the dang thing is buried pretty deep in there anyway. Parts on these old Kjets are scarce and expensive and I don't want a whole bunch of time in checking this out.
So anybody have ideas were to look for these symptoms? I was going to pull the pre pump and look for a split hose but am otherwise stumped.
BTW, this '81 gets up and GOES with a M46! It is way, way faster than my '91 with AW70. It's hard to believe it's all in the transmission, I've driven several early 80's 240s now that seem to have much more zip than the early 90's cars. Even the '82 244 AW70 I had seemed to just be peppier than either of the post 90 cars I've driven. Maybe it's in state of tune but my experiences are starting to have an impression on me.
