That ticking noise 700

General question, I'm sure you've all heard it, your engine making that rythmic ticking noise. like when you are driving along and you come to a stop light and you hear that "tick.tick.tick.tick" Very quite, but it's there. does anyone know what this is a result of, if I should be worried (i don't think I should worry since my last two volvo's did that, 740/240) and what one would do to make it more purr than tick.
