Oil leak successfully fixed 900 1993

Friends,

Just a small success report. Might cheer up anyone frustrated, I hope.

Have a ī93 940 turbo. I have been teased for 6 months or so by an oil leak at Oil filter mounting, due to a failing O-ring between mounting and block. Lately very strong smell of burnt oil if stepping hard on the gas pedal. Clear leak of oil at the site in case, probably with some drops hitting exhaust downpipe whenever gassing hard. In FAQs there is a picture if you look at

Lubrication,
Troubleshooting and tips,
Flickering Oil Pressure Light,

and where you at the bottom right side of the block see a dark circular, about 3 inch wide surface where the mounting normally attaches to the block.

After cleaning the area thoroughly (oil dispersing agent + 10 secs rinse with high pressure wash), I did as said in the FAQs, I disconnected the powersteering pump, pulled it forward and just let it hang from the hydraulic lines, still connected to the lines. 32 mm socket undid and pulled out the center bolt easily. To get old O-ring out, had to remove the small support at the rear end of the mount, after removing filter, and the coolant lines, and pulled the whole assembly out backwards. Put in the new O-ring (green, cost corresponding to $4.50 at Stockholm Volvo dealer), and mounted the whole thing back in reverse order. Took about 3 hours, would now be able to do it in half the time. No need to remove motor mount which is a suggested alternative in FAQs, This is the best news in this story.
When you insert the new O-ring in the groove, try to "reverse-roll" it a bit so it sits in place while mounting. If you just roll it in it attains a bit of "forward-roll" and might well roll out of the groove during mounting, due to the elastic recoil. With the intentional "reverse-roll" in the O-ring it keeps trying to roll further into the groove, staying in place during mounting (sounds corny, you will understand when you try it; jokes about condoms probably not suitable here :)))

While I was at it I realised it was much simpler to change the water pump at the same time, with the powersteering pump moved out, so did that too, but thatīs another story.

If you have not changed the coolant supply lines (rubber, with preformed bends) to the oil cooler at the base of the oil filter (mine were fresh, story told last summer) see to that you have some fresh ones at hand before starting the job. A 7 mm long-elongated sockets wrench is very handy to undo and retighten the hose clips with, on the coolant supply lines.

If you have the same problem, donīt hesitate, do this job.

Test-run engine for a few seconds to check for no-leak before re-mounting the powersteering pump etc. This test also facilitated by having the area thoroughly cleaned before starting job.

Cheers,

Gustafkalle
