what's the consensus on high octane gas? 200 1987

Hi Guys. What's the general consensus on high octane gas for volvo's? I've had two mechanics tell me to only buy high octane (premium) gasoline for my 87' 244. Whenever I tell people this they never believe me because a volvo doesn't have a "high performance" engine. Have I been getting misinformation or are the mechanics right? This issue has come up, as living in california, high octane gas is running around $2.80 a gallon...ouchie.
