First thank you to all who posted replys. All were helpful.This is to benefit those just tuning in. On tues. my car would not start. I by passed the relay,the car started fine and I drove it home to get aanother relay. Plugged in the replacement relay and the car started just fine so back to work I went.About 4 hours later I returned to the car and it would not start.Tried to by pass relay again but no luck.Had the car towed home.Check for spark,good.Another relay,no pump sound.Today I replaced the fuel pump but still no start. If I by pass the relay it starts!I tried using the relay from my 87 240 but the car will not start.This relay will work with the 87.I have 6 other white fuel pump relays that will not work with the 90 240.Now this is interesting,all 6 of these relays will start my 87 but when I turn the car off it keeps runnig. I have to disconnect the relay for the car to shut down, but that is another matter.
When I back probe the known good relay I do have ground at terminal 86b.So where to now?
Note on replacing fuel pump.
1] use surgical dispoable glove
2] don't try to remove the hose clamp from the pump. Just have a new clamp handy and cut the hose as close to the old clamp as possible
3] do have something close by to catch all the gas that is going to come out.Have the new pump and new clamp close by to minimize spill.
4] after removing the 10mm nut and bolt on one side of the old pump and the 10mm bolt holding the pump and filter together take the old pump to the bench.Here you can hacksaw the bolt running through the middle of the c-clamp and replace with a new oneΏ 1/2 long].
5] if it's been awhile since you replaced your filter now is a good time. You may also want to the little hose that attaches from the filter to the pump.All that stuff under there is going to be rusty not want to move.
