I can't accelerate out of 2nd gear! help! 200 1992

I just bought this car about 2.5 mos. ago and currently cannot accelerate out of 2nd gear. I was driving from New Hampshire to Ohio and after 10 hours, got to a stoplight, I found that the car couldn't accelerate over 22 mph without stressing the transmission (rpms) to a dangerous level. I just purchased this car for $2,000, otherwise it is in decent shape, with about 140,000 miles. Any words of wisdom? Can I hurt it more driving it to a mechanic, or should I just have it towed? Thanks so much!
