To start off I'd just like to say thanks to everyone on this board, my fathers managed to assemble a phone books worth of information from this site, and it's proven invaluable when I've been stuck repairing his brick.
Now to the problem, the vehicle in question is an '87 740 gle (non-turbo).
And it seems to be suffering some major vibration in the steering wheel when you attempt to turn left or right while driving or stopped. It's MORE evident when the vehicle is not in motion (no brakes applied either) and you try and turn the wheel left or right. I've already checked the bearings (also applied fresh grease), fluid level and replaced the belt (and it's properly tensioned). As well I've checked to see if any p/s line are loose and banging around, none found.
Now here's what's been replaced/fixed/adjusted in the last 2 years (in order);
Stablizer links (2 years ago)
outer tie rods (year and a half ago)
Had wheel alignment done immediately after
Steering rack (used but was in good shape) (Year and a half ago)
Had wheel alignment done immediately after
Balljoints (6 months ago)
Had wheel alignment done immediately after
Power steering pump (purchased a rebuilt one) (4 months ago)
Bled air out of system (using proper technique)
Front struts (last month)
Greased struts bearing at same time (bearing where in great shape)
Greased inner tie-rod (last month)
Removed surface rust from pass. side p/s ram(?) (what the inner tie rod is
connected to) (last month)
Bled air out of system (using proper technique)
Greased steering wheel bearings(located against interior firewall) (last week)
Removed steering yoke and freed 1 seized knuckle (this is the piece that connects the steering shaft to the rack)( 3am last night)
I believe that is everything off the top of my head that is related to the steering and suspension, and was r&r. I should also mention I've had a magnet tied to some fishing line sitting in the p/s resevoir for the last 3 weeks in hopes of removing some of the metallic shavings from the fluid. The magnet is not interfering with the fluid circulation (I checked that out to!)
The only 2 things that stand out are the drivers side lower stablizer link bushing is very compressed (a result of improper tightening when the struts were done, I'll fix that this evening) and the drivers side inner wheel bearing does have some minor wear on it (will be replaced this weekend). Other than that the only darn thing left to replace is that rack and p/s lines! And my wallet can't support those! Finally I do intend to have another wheel alignment done ASAP, but I'd like to get rid of this vibration problem first.
This vibration has been a problem for the last 2 months, and it did improve some when the yoke was unsiezed last night. Sorry for the long post, but I like to be thorough ;) .
Any suggestions?
Thx
