Tailpipe and Exhaust Sound 900

I recently had a new Volvo OEM cat-back exhaust installed. After later realizing that the tailpipe seemed too small (1 7/8 inches) for a 940 Turbo, the vendor sent me a new replacement "turbo" (2 1/4 inch) tailpipe made by Starla. The issue is that now the exhaust seems quite a bit louder and "throaty", as compared with the 1 7/8 inch tailpipe ... approaching the loudness of the old system that was rusted out. The guy who changed the tailpipe did a good deal of pounding on the tailpipe to get it off. Assuming nothing else came loose, does it make sense that the diameter of the tailpipe can make a noticeable difference in the exhaust loudness ?
