Turbo 'coking' signs? and slight ticking/knock coming from 700

Well, I sure do miss the East Coast's availability of Volvos since I've relocated here to Kansas City. If anyone knows of any good yards out in this area I sure would appreciate having the locations.

Out here there's a lot of highway driving, and gas has actually decreased from the 2.28 it when I arrived two weeks ago to 2.05 (this morning). I've also got to accurately measure my MPG and it's close to 26MPG, which is a GREAT improvement over what I was getting when I first purchased this car about 15 months ago (14MPG). Much thanks to the boarders for tolerating my novice questions and only occasionally referring me to the FAQs (smile).

So, here's my latest one: when it's raining, or threatening to rain, I notice that the tach wants to dip from 750 to around 500-600 for less than a second, but you can feel the miss each time it does it. When the air is dry tach is usually very steady and it's difficult to even hear the engine running it's so smooth. I am wondering if this might be a distributor issue? I have a backup one that doesn't look to be in much better shape than the one I currently have in the car, but I don't want to go through the trouble of swapping it if it's something else that might be done prior to that.

Also, what are the symptoms of when a turbo is showing the effects of "coking"? When I bought this vehicle the turbo was shot (which is why I got such a great price on it) and replaced it with a junker that looked to be in better shape than the one it came with. When in OD (and it only happens then) I hear the slightest knocking noise that comes from the area of the back of the firewall where the turbo would be. It's not pinging one associates with values or lifters. When I hear the knock/ticking sound, if I back off of the gas and then reaccelerate the knock/tick ceases. It's kinda weird, and the knock/tick is not loud, just barely noticeable with the radio off.

All recommendations / suggestions appreciated.
