revving B280E at idle 700

My 760 GLE (1989 model with B280E V6) has taken to running very unevenly at idle after getting warmed up. The symptoms appear when in "N" or "Park" after a run and when waiting in traffic etc. The engine revs between 500 and 1500 rpm with a regular surge up and down. The fault is intermittent and doesn't always appear. Any suggestions as to the cause and what I can do to fix it greatly appreciated - thanks
