Almost overheats 900 1993

I have a 1993 940, non-turbo. Summer or winter, the temp gauge was always solidly in the center of the scale. However, lately the needle sometimes heads up almost into the red when I slow down and get into traffic. It never used to do this. I turn on the heat and the fan, and it starts to recover - when I get out of trafiic and up to a decent speed it recovers completely.
What could this be? Tired coolant?
