Fried Speedometer -- and it doesn't taste alot like chicken! 200 1989

O.K! Like a dumb a-- I fried my instrument cluster and I think my speedometer.

I received my parts instrument cluster from a member of this board and I proceeded to pull the parts off that I needed to make mine work correctly (my fuel, temp, odometer and trip counter didn't work).

I put everything together and went out to re-install it in the car. It was getting dark and like a fool I didn't take a light out with me. I've pulled dozens of instrument clusters in my time so I didn't think I need a light ----- wrong!! I connected everything, turned the key on and noticed my speedometer swing over to 90MPH with the car not running sitting still. I had that moment of "OH Sh--" and I turned the key off.

I pulled the cluster and I had connected a red wire where the orange cruise wire would go -- "where the he-- did that come from!!!" I pulled the wire off and replaced it with the orange wire and put it all together again. I drove the car and noticed the odometer still didnt work even though I replaced the broken gear. The speedometer was reading WAY to high, like 120 when it should be 60 or 70. I pulled the cluster again and inspected the circuit board where I located fried parts. I had another board so I changed it and reinstalled it. All my gauges work now but the speedometer still registers fast and the odometer and trip counter still don't work ---- it sucks to be me.

Did I fry the speedometer or is it possible that because the gear I used came off of an instrument cluster out of a Wagon instead of a Sedan that it is just incompatible?

Does anyone have a sedan speedometer they want to get rid of??

**Moral to this story: Don't put power on anything you have not checked and double checked first or you may just let the smoke out of it.

Thanks for your help.
