Bizarre brake behavior. Brakes fix themself????? 120-130

Whew, this is a new one for me and I thought I had seen it all, [within reason of course.] I will start at the top. I have been slowly bringing the old 122 back to life. Car has been in the family for 37 years. It had not been driven for about 15 years. Had to replace the gas tank and of course the brakes were shot. I replaced the master cylinder, rear cylinders, brake shoes, adjusters, new hardware and all the brake lines. It is a '66 with the single circuit brake system by the way. Car is not registered so I only drive it around the neighborhood. I did all this about 6 months ago and have maybe put 20 or 30 miles on the car at low speeds, under 35mph. I replaced the exhaust system last week and decided to drive it around the area. Had to make a sudden really hard stop and I felt the pedal go down about an inch or so. It felt like something let loose or bypassed. I continued to drive the car back to the house and the pedal seemed to feel ok, maybe just a little lower than usual. Next day I decided to take it on its first foray above 45 mph. Backed out of the carport and the brake pedal felt a little mushy, then went down to the end of the street for its first stop and the pedal was getting progressivly lower. I started to be a little concerned and kept one hand on the emergency brake.
I continued to drive the car but eventually I had no pedal left at all. I carefully drove it home and parked it. Checked the reservoir and it was almost bone dry so I filled it with fluid. Punped the brakes and got no pedal, nada, nothing. I was to disgusted to even look at it. I let it sit for four days and last night I got back in the car and the pedal was hard as a rock. I couldn't belive it. It was almost like somebody had bled the brakes. Any ideas? Do you think I should trust the new master cylinder? I have not looked at the wheels yet to see if there is any fluid leaks but I did not see any fresh fluid on the carport floor either. To add insult to injury now the car wont turn over. I had just put a new/used starter relay on it and I suspect it failed. Car has the dreaded BW35 hence the relay. Any comments would be appreciated.
