88 240 dies while coming to idle 200

friends,

while coming to a stop, shifting out of any gear, this beloved 240 will sometimes die, and sometimes nearly die. it doesn't seem to be a function of the car being warmed up. my only recourse has been to come to a stop in neutral, with one foot reving the engine and the other on the brake. is this more likely to be just an idle adjustment or having to do with the idle air control valve? or any other ideas?
