Foam baffle under panel air filter - okay to remove? 700

Purchased a K&N panel filter for my 1990 740 Turbo. When I removed the airbox lid and the stock style air filter to install it, I noticed the HUGE foam insert/baffle that fills up most of the airbox. Any disadvantage to removing this? It seems like it just resticts airflow. I suspect the airbox may be a little louder with it removed, butif it will help my Brick breath better, I can handle that.
