95 960 Weird Radio speaker problem 900

1995 960, 119K Miles.
Have a really strange problem with my front speakers. My front speakers work for a while and then completely go out. Then a few minutes later they start working again. Sometimes they fade in and out rapidly in a matter of seconds. When this problem first started it was my rear speakers that would go out. Now it is my front ones. Is it the radio? a relay? I have taken the unit out and checked all the connections. Everything looks good. I don't think it is the speakers since when they work they work great.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
