in tank fuel pump repair 200 1988

Hello everyone,
problem just occured with my 240. car can barely run in gear. starts hard and idles a little funky but to throttle up the engine it cuts out.I could hear both pumps run with the key on so I took the cover plate in the trunk off started the car up and the top of the sending unit filled up with gas the top looks pretty grody (western NY road salt) and I couldn't really tell a source of the leak but from the look of the gas filling the top I think the pump is running ok.any tips on changing out the sending unit or is this a complete pump and sending unit job? got a Bentley manual and I was wondering if anyone knows any proven tips on getting this job done. Thanks DK
