544 pinion backlash 444-544

Howdy y'all! I have a 1960 544 B16B with M4 transmission and am experiencing backlash from my pinion. I am looking for ideas, suggestions, parts availability, etc. Any ideas please let me know. I am hoping to be able to repair by using new thrust washers (shims) but have not been able to get them yet. Worst case I may need a new pinion. Has anyone done this or had similar experience? Thanks.
