A/C on my '96 960 acting weird! S90-V90

I was out a noon today with strong sun but cool high 50's temperature and my A/C seemed to start acting crazy. Just driving along nice and comfortable and all of a sudden it switched to Recirculation and proceeded to freeze me. Has anyone had experience with sudden failure in the controller such as would be caused by broken solder joints in this vintage unit?

'96 965, 16' wheels, rear 18mm bar & Koni + 204HP cams at 125K. Had '85 745 Turbo Diesel for 200K.
