Hi all,

My 240 has suddenly decided to die on me (fortunately in my garage for once). For a while now it would run extreamly rough occasionally on start up. Then it would die completely, and be nearly impossible to start up again (I can smell gas).Regardless, now it is completely dead.

I have the Bosch ignition with the points.. I'm not completely sure which system it is as the my Haynes manual is somewhat useless in this regard. I has a condenser and points in the distributor a wire that comes off the distributor that seems to lead to the coil ( - ). And another wire that gets +12v when the ignition switch is turned to position II - this leads to the coil (+). There is a RED wire that seems to lead from the firewall to the - side of the coil. The red wire doesnt have any voltage at any ignition switch position.

The black wire in the distributor that leads from the condensor to the connector on the side of the distributor was replaced because I noticed that it was completely burnt up.

Could the distributor points being gapped wrong cause a no start condition? And if so how the heck to you get the cam assembly nub to line up with the little bump thing on the condenser?(aside from cranking the starter in little bursts)

I'm going to get a Multimeter this weekend and see what the voltages are at terminals 1 & 15.
