Dear Fellow Brickboarders,

May this find you well. I have some questions about testing a Nippon DENSO 14 VOLT alternator. A local auto store (PEP Boys) told me, that they cannot test this alternator, as their computerized tester is not set up for it, because DENSO has not released the technical data.

I have the following questions:
(a) Is it possible to test an alternator "on the bench" by turning it with a high-speed drill(1,200 rpm)? If not, is there any way to do a "bench test" for this alternator? If so, what things need to be done, and how should they be done?
(b) If this alternator can be tested "on the bench", by spinning it with a drill, does the red wire (that goes to the instrument cluster) have to be connected to anything?
(c) If the alternator is sound, should one get a reading of about 14 volts, when the alternator is spinning at 1,200 rpm?

I simply want to find out, if this alternator - second hand and not yet installed - is putting out the right amount of voltage.
