Transmission won't kick down - 1990 760GLE (V6) 700 1990

Hi,

Problem: the car won't kickdown from OD when the accelerator is floored and speed is above 60mph. It will not kickdown from 3rd in lower speeds (terrain does not matter: downhill, level or uphill). Assuming the kickdown cable adjustment is OK, what else could be wrong and how can I troubleshoot? Thanks for all the advice.
