Voltage stabilizer/voltage regulator 140-160 1968

I've been trying to upgrade the voltage stabilizer in my 142 to a voltage regulator using a solid state device called "T220 UA7810CKC" which is supposed to drop the voltage to 10v to the fuel and temp gauges. My first real try fried the gauges so I measured the voltage drop on the old VS and found that the output was a fluctuating 4-6v. I have two websites that tell me 10volt output is what's wanted. Why am I frying the gauges with 10v and what should the real output be?
