240 B21A No Start - Possible Broken Timing Belt 200 1981

Hello All.

A couple of days ago, I started the car and everything was fine. I proceeded to pull out of the garage and just had this feeling that something was wrong. Basically, the car just died. I tried restarted, but all I got was the starter motor whirring like crazy.

I suspected the starter, but thought I'd check out the forums. Here is what I've discovered.

1) Key ON Position II: all dash lights as they should be, click of starter heard

2) By-passed the ignition switch with a jumper between the starter and the battery: same result

3) inspected plugs - all okay (plugs, plug wires, points, condenser replaced about 6 months ago)

4) tested for spark: nothing

5) Ignition Coil Resistance: primary = 2.3 ohms, secondary = 9.02 kohms
* I've read here that the primary for a Bosch 0-221-122-006 KW 12V should be 1.6 to 2 ohms. I've read on vlvworld.com that it should be 0.5 to 0.9 ohms. I'm not sure which is correct.
* On vlvworld.com, the secondary should be from 6k to 9.5k

6) Ignition Coil Voltage: with key ON position II, 6.56 V is read from #15. This seems quite low.

7) Timing Belt: removed oil fill cap, got someone to crank, and the camshaft did nothing. Partially removed the belt cover just to be sure... nothing.

I decided to stop there since if I don't have a belt, I will get no spark, no fuel, and no start.

Does it look like the belt needs to be replaced? I suspect that my ignition coil isn't quite up to the task anymore either.

I am at a loss since the timing belt was replaced about 2.5 years and about 25,000 kilometres ago. I suppose these things happen....

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Allan
