Are 740 and 240 M47 trannys interchangeable?

We're trying to find a replacement for the M47 in my son's '88 245. We are asking if an M47 from a 740 would be a direct swap into the '88 240. If so, what years of the 740 would work? The '88 240 has a flex disc on the output. Are the shifter connections the same?
