I hate to labor this subject even more, but I've got some shock/struts questions. 200

I'm considering doing my own strut install on my '88 245 and I'm wondering if this is over my head. I'm definitely a "green-horn" when it comes to mechanicall stuff, but I just replaced my motor and tranny mounts without loosing any fingers, I know struts are another matter.
Just to see what the job would cost I called a local mechanic who specializes in Volvos and he quoted me $140 which seems fair, is this a good price?
When I told him the shocks I was considering were gas, he insisted that I would hate the unforgiving ride that they would provide and to go with hydro. I checked fcp groton and all they offer are gas(I think).I want something comfy for daily driving but I also don't want to feel like I'm driving and old cadillac.

My questions are: Is this a extremely technical job? Is $140 a good price? And is the mechanic wrong about gas being too harsh? Sorry if I rambled on longer then needed and thanks for any input! -James
