HVAC Failure 1995 960 90,000 miles

Started driving my 1995 960 yesterday, turned A/C on high and heard what sounded like a giant vacuum sealed can being opened. After that the blower fan was extremely weak and sounded like it was disengaged from the housing. Any ideas what may have happened and what's involved in the repair?
